How to Hang a Neon Sign (No, You Don't Need a Contractor)

So your neon sign just arrived. You open the box, it looks awesome, and then you look at your wall and think… okay, now what?

Good news: hanging a neon sign is way easier than you probably think. You don't need special skills. You don't need to hire anyone. And you definitely don't need to stress about it.

What You'll Actually Need

Chances are, you already have what you need sitting in a drawer somewhere.

Most signs come with pre-drilled holes on the back or a mounting bracket. All you really need is a couple of screws, maybe a wall anchor if you're hanging it on drywall, and a screwdriver.

That's it.

If your sign is on the smaller side, adhesive hooks or command strips can also work--just make sure they're strong enough to hold the weight.

Where to Put It

Before you start drilling holes, hold the sign up where you think you want it. Step back. Look at it from a few feet away. Maybe even take a photo with your phone to see how it looks.

This sounds obvious, but it saves you from patching holes later because you changed your mind.

Also, think about where the power outlet is. The cord should reach without stretching across the middle of your wall. If you want a super clean look, you can use cord clips or run the cord behind furniture--no need to hide it in the wall.

  • If you're hanging on drywall and not hitting a stud, use a wall anchor so the screws hold tight
  • A level is helpful if you want things perfectly straight, but eyeballing it works too
  • If your sign is heavy or going above a bed, consider mounting it into a stud for extra peace of mind
