Can You Put LED Neon Signs Outside? And Do They Need to Be Waterproof?

So you've got the perfect spot picked out. Maybe it's your patio. Maybe it's above the garage. Or maybe you run a little shop and want your sign out front where everyone can see it.

Makes sense. A glowing sign outside looks amazing.

But before you hang it up and call it a day, there's one thing you need to know: most LED neon signs are made for inside your home--not out in the rain.

Quick Answer: Usually No, But It Depends

The signs you see in our shop? Those are indoor signs. They're not waterproof. They're not built to handle sun, rain, or snow.

That said, we can make outdoor-ready signs. You just have to ask.

If you've got a specific outdoor spot in mind--a deck, a storefront, a garden wall--just reach out before you order. We'll let you know what's possible and walk you through the options.

What Happens If You Put an Indoor Sign Outside?

Short version: it's not gonna hold up.

Rain can get inside the tubing. Sun can fade the color over time. Extreme heat or cold can mess with the wiring. It's not that the sign instantly breaks the second it gets wet--but it's not built to last out there.

If you're okay with it being temporary? Maybe you just want it up for a weekend party? That's a different story. But if you want something that stays outside for months or years, you'll want the outdoor version.

What Makes a Sign Outdoor-Ready?

The main difference is the coating. Outdoor signs get extra sealing around the edges and a heavier-duty casing to keep moisture out. The LEDs themselves are the same--they're already pretty tough--but the protection around them is what changes.

We also use different materials for the backing and the wiring to make sure everything holds up in sun and rain.

A Few Quick Things to Keep in Mind

Even with an outdoor sign, there are a couple things that help it last longer:

  • Avoid putting it where water pools or drips directly on it
  • Keep it out of direct afternoon sun if you can (it helps with fading)
  • If you live somewhere with extreme cold or heat, let us know--we can make sure it's rated for your climate

So What Should You Do?

If you want a sign for outside, just tell us when you're ordering. We'll make sure you get the right version.

If you already have an indoor sign and you're thinking about moving it outside? It'll probably be fine for a short time--like a weekend BBQ or a party--but long-term, you'll want to go with one that's made for it.

Either way, we've got you covered. Just ask.
